Outreach Ministries
Mission and outreach are central to our identity at OPC. Our mission programs are a way to serve those in need and also provide opportunities for us to share our time, talents, and resources. Click on the ministries below to learn more about them and our participation.
AMIS
Atlanta Ministry to International Students (AMIS) is a peacemaking ministry for students and scholars from other countries that connects students to host families for friendship and hospitality. OPC is one of the six founding churches of AMIS. Click here for more information about AMIS
Bargain Shop
Operated by the women of OPC, the Bargain Shop receives donations of pre-owned clothing and household items from OPC members and others in the community. These items are sold three times a year at exceptionally low prices. Proceeds go directly to the Food Pantry. Over time, the Bargain Shop has become quite a tradition and gained a number of loyal customers who look forward to each sale.
Food Pantry
The Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church Food Pantry is in its fifth decade of serving needy families in our community. Open on Tuesday and Friday mornings at the Suthers' Center for Christian Outreach in Chamblee, the Food Pantry is a collaborative effort of area churches, Oglethorpe University's community garden, and our own members and friends. Click here for more information about Food Pantry
Habitat for Humanity
Last year OPC partnered with others to build a habitat house in the Oakland City community in Southwest Atlanta, contributing approximately $3,000 and many enjoyable hours to the project. Click here for more information about Habitat for Humanity
Iglesia Presbiteriana de Restauración
OPC hosts an immigrant fellowship, Iglesia Presbyteriana de la Restauración (IPR), in its chapel as a ministry of hospitality. IPR is comprised entirely of recent arrivals to the United States from Mexico, Central America, and South America. IPR numbers approximately 80 members, including many children. Our congregations occasionally join together for worship and table fellowship.
Interfaith Outreach Home
OPC is a sponsoring church for Interfaith Outreach Home, a ministry providing housing for homeless families in transition as they acquire job training or begin a new job. Click here for more information about Interfaith Outreach Home
Journey (The Druid Hills Night Shelter)
For over 29 years, Journey (the Druid Hills Night Shelter) has lived its passion to help Metro Atlanta men move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Journey remains focused and committed to our mission to encourage, empower and establish men who have experienced homelessness on their journey to self-reliance through employment, education, housing and counseling.
Journey has transitioned from a seasonal shelter with modest services to a year round shelter focused on employment and education. Journey seeks to meet the essential needs of its residents. In this effort we offer food, shelter, clothing and support to help them cope with life’s many challenges.
We believe Journey will transform men to self sufficiency.
Lifespan
Lifespan is an organization providing transport, educational programs, and other services to elderly patients and their families in Buckhead and Brookhaven. OPC provides financial support.
Mar Elias Educational Institutions (Ibillin, Israel)
Founded by Bishop Elias Chacour in the tiny Galilean village of Ibillin, Mar Elias first opened its doors in 1982 and the philosophy that has endured to this day was born. MEEI is an oasis for all regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or religious affiliation, a place where "peace is built on the desks of children." Click here for more information about Mar Elias Educational Institutions (Ibillin, Israel)
Open Door Community
The Open Door is a residential community in downtown Atlanta which ministers to (and is ministered to by) homeless men and women. OPC members prepare and serve lunch on a regular basis. Click here for more information about Open Door Community
Thornwell Home for Children
The Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, South Carolina, has been taking care of children in need since its founding in 1875. With a warm, loving, Christian cottage atmosphere, the support of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and donations from congregations and individuals, Thornwell nurtures more than 100 children separated from their families because of financial or physical problems, separation, divorce, dependency, abuse, or disabling health of parents and guardians. The women of OPC are happy to sponsor a Thornwell child. Click here for more information about Thornwell Home for Children
In addition to the above, OPC provides meeting space to various groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and various neighborhood and civic associations.
